Tablet pc system software possibilities
The development of tablet computers is expected to have a dramatic impact on the way that people use computers. However that impact is somewhat limited by the fact that people are still trying to figure out uses for tablets. Part of the problem is that there is very little software that was designed specifically to be used on tablets. This is something that is starting to change.
The possibilities when it comes to software for tablets is almost endless. They all use an operating system that was originally designed to be used on a smart phone which itself is based on operating systems that were designed for computers. That means that you can run pretty much any software that you would on any other computer on a tablet. This may sound like a good thing but it does present some problems, the biggest is that trying to run software that was intended for other platforms is not really the best option.
The main problem with using software that was not designed specifically for tablets is that it can be hard to use. Most software was designed to have data entered using a keyboard. While this is possible with a tablet it is hardly a practical way of doing things. Clearly if tablets are going to gain widespread acceptance it will be necessary to come up with a better way of entering information. The most likely option is with a stylus but this will require specific software that is designed for the task. At the current time the options are limited.
One of the reasons that there is little in the way of software available specifically for tablets is that nobody is quite sure of what they are going to be used for. Tablets are one of those technologies that were developed despite the fact that there was no clear reason for them to exist. Despite that people are finding uses for them as they figure out what tablets are good at and what they struggle with. While this learning process goes on the software developers have stayed on the sidelines while they wait to see how most people are going to use the tablet so that they can design the appropriate software.
As the tablet becomes more widely used there will be more software developed specifically for it. When this happens people will be able to take full advantage of the tablet and get the maximum use out of it. Currently that is not happening because the software being is used was designed for other purposes. How much software gets developed for tablets will depend in large part on how widely used they become which is still an open question. However it may be that they don't become widely used until the software is developed creating a bit of a chicken or egg situation.
