What is a tablet pc?

Over the last couple of years tablet computers have become a topic of much discussion. This happened mainly because Apple introduced the iPad with a lot of hype. There is some debate about just how useful tablets actually are so there is some question about their future. However for now people are buying them in reasonably large numbers which is enough to encourage other manufacturers to produce their own products.

A tablet computer is basically a full computer that is integrated into a flat touch screen. Basically it falls in between a smart phone and a laptop in what it can do. For the most part they are more useful for functions that are similar to those that are done with a smart phone except that they are more capable because they have more computing power. The belief is that someday they will replace laptops for most mobile computing applications but that is still a fair distance in the future, they are not yet at the same level of capability as a laptop.

Although tablets have been around for about twenty years the first of the modern generation of tablets came on the market when Apple introduced the iPad in 2010. This was different from previous tablets because it relied entirely on the touch screen as a way to input data and had no keyboard. The other thing that made the iPad different from earlier tablets was that it included the features that you would find on a mobile phone. Although when it was first announced there was a lot of skepticism about the usefulness of the iPad it has actually proved to a very popular product.

The success of the iPad has resulted in other companies bringing their own tablets to market. This has really started to blur the line between the tablet and the smart phone. With tablets getting smaller and smart phones getting more capable it will soon be hard to tell them apart if things continue to go the way they are. In fact most tablets actually use the same operating system as smart phones which means that really the only difference is in the size of the screen.

The future of the tablet is still something of an open question. While they have certainly found a market most users seem to be people who will run out and buy any new technology that comes out. The real issue is whether or not people will find them useful enough to replace their laptop with them. As it stands right now this is not happening on a large scale. The main reason may be that people are finding that they need to have a keyboard in order to use their computer efficiently; this is clearly an issue for tablets that may be difficult to overcome.
